How scammers use Telegram to target your customers
Telegram's pseudonymous registration and viral invite mechanics make it the preferred platform for brand impersonation at scale. A typical attack follows this pattern:
Step 1 — Channel creation: Attacker creates a channel named "@YourBrandOfficialSupport" with a copied brand logo and description. Channel creation is instant, free, and anonymous.
Step 2 — Member acquisition: Targeted invite campaigns via other Telegram groups (known customers, industry groups) grow the channel to hundreds of members within days.
Step 3 — Credential harvest: Pinned messages direct members to "verify" their accounts via a phishing bot or linked lookalike domain. OTPs, passwords, and KYC documents are collected.
Step 4 — Monetization: Credentials sold, accounts drained, or secondary fraud (SIM swap requests, account recovery abuse) executed.
